COMING ON SUNDAY ~ LIVE/WHIRLED! ~ The 3rd season of Live/Whirled, my Interactive Music Series @ Perishable Theatre begins this Sunday, November 16 @ 5:00 PM with “Avant-Whirled,” featuring the Gillen Street Project— Bert Crenca (flute, percussion, voice), Tony Teixeira (bass, voice), Susan Clausen (banjo, ukulele, voice), and Nisha Purushotham (percussion, voice). Admission is $8, and any donations to support the series are also appreciated. You can be a “Friend” for a mere $10; a “Fan” for a $25 donation (includes a concert ticket & a thank-you CD); or “The Coolest” for $50 (includes a 4-concert series ticket and a CD).
The series continues with a bluegrass concert by the Pegheads in December, a Brazilian concert by Choro Democratico in February, and a multi-media mandolin concert by me in March. I’ve attached a series flyer with info on the musicians, how to reserve tickets, and how to donate. Hope to see those of you who live nearby on Sunday!
MORE MUSIC IN NOVEMBER ~ I performed the past two Sundays w/ guitarist/composer Robert N. Martel, presenting our own compositions for the first time as a duo. The concerts were fun and our audiences gave our music high marks.
Coming up, my octet Enigmatica will perform for the “Arts in the Village” series in Rehoboth MA on Saturday, November 22. We’ll play Baroque, Brazilian, and Contemporary music, as always, with a splash of Cuba and Argentina, and music by our friends Will Ayton and Ann Carr Boyd. ÁGUA No FEIJAO’S CD IS A HIT! ~ “Roda no Rio,” is out and getting rave reviews! It’s up on my website CD store now @ http://www.marilynnmair.com/ and for those of you who live outside the US, Elderly Instruments has it in their online catalog as well. The CD is mainly choro, from our perspective, and includes “Por Que Nao” [Why Not?] a piece I wrote for the band. It’s a fun CD, and may fill in the blanks for those of you who have been wondering what I do in Rio.
AMGuSS 2009 ~ Well, we’ve had our sabbatical, and missed you all, so Ralph & I & the faculty are planning to be back in action this summer. I’ll have specific dates soon and will be sending out a special announcement about the new look of our classic at the beginning of December.
CELEBRATING A YEAR ~ I’m writing an online blog for the first time ever, as a way to keep creativity front and center in my life, despite obligations of teaching and life in general. I started on my birthday in October, and now am thinking out loud, taking photos, and writing sonnets and new choro on a regular schedule for a whole year. Curious? The next issue of “MARILYNN ON MANDOLIN” will be out in January, and will come to you from sunny Rio. It will be great to be back there in their summer (our winter), but I have to admit it’s been pretty great to be in RI this autumn too. I’m lucky to be able to live in two worlds, at least part-time.
